Esther Tielemans (born 1976 in Helmond, the Netherlands) investigates shape, colour and matter. Having once been a painter of landscapes, nowadays she has made the landscape itself her work: she makes three-dimensional installations. These consist of monochrome panels in geometric shapes. The panels are given reflectivity by their coatings of paint and gloss epoxy. Bursting with colour, they hang from walls, lie on the ground or are suspended in mid-air. The glossy surfaces of her work reflect the environment and the viewer. Licks of transparent paint make it appear as if the works are constantly being caught in the glare of headlamps or beams.Asked whether what she makes are paintings or sculptures, she replies unhesitatingly, “I'm a painter. My train of thought and everything I make arises from painting. Call me a three-dimensional painter.” *
